Beagle requires moderate-high level of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and stress-free. We recommend at least 45-60 minutes of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep your kennel happy and cheerful. It's also important to adjust the exercise duration to suit your dog. For instance, a puppy requires significantly lesser amount of exercise compared to an adult dog. Beagles enjoy a variety of activities, such as walking, fetching, agility training, and others, especially digging and running. Because they are hound dog, they have a strong instinct to follow scents and if off-leash could disappear quickly following the scent of a small animal. In summary, this breed needs daily exercise to maintain their health, wellbeing and to keep them stress-free. They are quite energetic and enjoy a variety of activities and benefit from a mix of physical and mental stimulation. Because of their strong instinct of hunting and scent, they can quickly disappear following other smaller animals. So be sure to keep an eye at your kennel.
Beagle sheds moderately and is quite a low maintenance dog due to its short, thick coat which is waterproof and provide protection from elements like dust and debris.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Beagle:
Brushing: We recommend grooming your dog at least 1 time a week to maintain the coat health and keep them moist.
Bathing: Because of its thick coat that is quite persistent to outside elements, we recommend bathing your Beagle only once a week. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your kennel to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: The frequency of nail clipping depends on the surface where your dog mostly walk on. Otherwise clip your dog's nails once every 6-8 weeks are enough. But whenever you do, be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: Beagle's ears require extra attention as they are floppy and dropped down, which make them prone to infections. In general, we recommend cleaning their ears every 2 to 3 weeks. For cleaning, be sure to use a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria in the long run.
Overall, a Beagle is a low maintenance dog that doesn't require a lot of grooming, bathing or cleaning due to its thick, soft coat. But due to their dropped (pendant) ears that are prone to infections, we recommend paying extra attention to the ear cleaning.
