Living in an HDB flat is a common housing option for many residents in Singapore, and for those who wish to keep a puppy or dog as a pet, it is important to know which breeds are HDB approved. The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has a list of approved dog breeds that residents are allowed to keep in their flats. These breeds have been deemed suitable for apartment living and are generally considered to be smaller, quieter and less likely to cause problems with neighbours.

Which dogs are HDB approved?
As of 2021, there are 62 dog breeds that are HDB approved. They are generally smaller in size. The list includes popular breeds such as the Poodle, Maltese, Jack Russell Terrier, and Miniature Schnauzer. The full list of approved breeds can be found below in the next section.

What size dog is HDB approved?
There is no specific size requirement for HDB approved dogs, but generally, smaller breeds are preferred. The HDB recommends that dogs be no taller than 40cm at the shoulders and weigh no more than 10kg. However, some relatively larger breeds such as the Shetland Sheepdog and the Japanese Spitz are also HDB approved.

Which dog is best for HDB?
The best dog for HDB living depends on your lifestyle and preferences. Some popular HDB approved breeds include the Shih Tzu, Poodle, and Maltipoo. These breeds are generally smaller in size, quieter and require less exercise. However, it is important to research each breed and consider their individual needs and temperament before making a decision.

Why are some dogs not HDB approved?
Dogs that are not HDB approved are typically larger breeds and breeds that are considered to be potentially aggressive or require a lot of exercise and space. These dogs may be difficult to manage in an apartment setting and could pose a danger to other residents in the block.

Below are some very popular dog breeds that are not HDB Approved.
  • Corgis are not HDB approved because they are a herding breed and may be prone to barking and chasing after people or objects. This could cause disturbance to neighbours living in close proximity. Additionally, Corgis have been known to shed heavily, which may cause cleanliness issues in shared spaces.
  • Golden Retrievers are not HDB approved due to their larger size and exercise requirements. These dogs need plenty of space to run and play, which may be difficult to provide in a small apartment. Additionally, their size and energy level may cause disturbance to neighbours.
  • Shiba Inus are not HDB approved. They are a small to medium-sized breed and are generally well-suited for apartment living. However, Shiba Inus are known for their strong-willed personality and may require consistent training and socialization to prevent behavioural issues.
  • Beagles are not HDB approved due to their high energy level and strong sense of smell. They may become easily bored and may be prone to excessive barking or destructive behaviour if not properly exercised or stimulated. Additionally, their strong sense of smell may cause issues with other residents.
  • Cocker Spaniels are not HDB approved. They are a medium-sized breed but are generally well-suited for apartment living. However, it is important to provide them with regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent behavioural issues. Additionally, Cocker Spaniels may require regular grooming to maintain their coat.

Is it possible to get non-HDB approved dog to be approved in HDB?
