Despite their small size, the Cocker Spaniel is a fairly active and outgoing dog that require moderate-high level exercise to stay healthy and stress-free. We recommend at least 50-75 minutes of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep your canine happy and cheerful. It's also important to adjust the exercise duration to suit your dog. For instance, a puppy requires significantly lesser amount of exercise compared to an adult. A Cocker Spaniel enjoys a variety of activities, such as walking, fetching, digging, agility training, and others, especially small hunting games to help sharpen its hunting instinct. So if you left your dog alone in the garden, be sure to keep an eye on it as it might get distracted by small animals and run away following them. In summary, they require daily exercise to maintain their health, wellbeing and to keep them stress-free. They are fairly energetic and enjoy a variety of activities and benefit from a mix of physical and mental stimulation. But make sure not to over-exercise your dog as this breed can easily get injured and be sure to adjust the intensity based on its age.
The Cocker Spaniel sheds moderately and even more so during the shedding season. Due to its thick wavy coat, it requires an extra attention to keep the fur untangled, dust-free and clean.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Cocker Spaniel:
Brushing: Due to its wavy nature, we recommend grooming your dog at least 1-2 times a week to maintain the coat healthy, free of mats and keep them moist.
Bathing: Because of its outgoing nature which can easily get their coat dirty and the hot humid climate of Singapore, we recommend bathing your dog at least 1-2 times a wekk. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your kennel to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: The frequency of nail clipping depends on the surface where your dog mostly walk on. Otherwise clip your dog's nails once every 6-8 weeks are enough. But whenever you do, be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: Cocker Spaniel's ears are prone to infection due to their floppy nature. For cleaning, we recommend you clean them regularly with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria in the long run.
Overall, Cocker Spaniels are quite a high maintenance breed of dog that require extra attention in grooming, bathing and cleaning. They are also prone to ear infections, which require regular cleaning and monitoring.
