Breed Characteristics

One of the most endearing feature of the corgis is their short legs, which adds extra sway on their bottom when they walk. They were bred this way to avoid being kicked by the animals they were herding such as sheep and cattle! They were a firm favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth II who had corgies all her life.

They are very active breed with extra stamina, hence suitable for families with active lifestyle.

There are 2 types of corgies as we know them, Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigan Welsh Corgis have very similar appearances, however they are two separate breed. Most of the corgi puppies being bred now are Pembroke Welsh Corgis due to their more friendly, outgoing personality, whereas Cardigan Welsh Corgis tend to be more reserved.

Here are the main differences between the two:
1. Tail : Cardigan usually have thick lush tails. However Pembroke tends to have bob tail or have the tails docked. However nowadays docking is frowned upon as it doesn't serve any health benefit, hence there are many more Pembroke with similar long tails.

2. Weight: Cardigans are generally bigger than Pembroke. Cardigans weigh between 12-16 kg and stand 10.5-12.5 inches tall at the shoulder, while Pembrokes  weigh between 11-15 kg and stand 10-12 inches tall at the shoulder.

Overall, while there are some similarities between the two breeds, they are distinct in their physical characteristics and personality traits.

Exercise Requirements

Corgis are an active breed and require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental health. Without proper exercise, they can become overweight, which can lead to other health problems.
Here are some guidelines for exercising a Corgi:
  1. Daily walks:  at least 30-60 minutes of walking per day, depending on the dog's personality and activity level. This will also provide mental stimulation to prevent boredom.
  2. Playtime: When it is raining, owners can consider indoor games like fetch, frisbee, tug-of war. There are also a plethora of food based "IQ" games that can stimulate them. Teaching tricks such as sit, down, roll over, play dead is also an excellent opportunity for bonding and stimulation. In fact, many dogs get more tired after a short session of trick training compared to the usual walks!
  3. Hiking and outdoor activities: For nature lovers, long walks hiking are the best. Strap them up with doggy backpacks just like how they were traditionally used as working dogs to pull carts in the Swiss Alps.
  4. Mental stimulation: Playtime and mental stimulation go hand in hand. Puzzle games, trick training can easily be learned from many youtube videos. Even a simple kong toy with treats inside will also provide much needed entertainment.
It's important to remember that every dog is different, and exercise needs can vary based on age, health, and lifestyle. Consult with a professional dog trainer to get the best training plan for your dog.

Grooming Requirements

They need to be groomed once a week.

Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Corgi:
Brushing: Once a week with a deshedding comb. This will remove the dead undercoat layer and minimise shedding in the house. If not brushed regularly, the dead undercoat can get compacted and tangled which cause skin irritation and overheating. During shedding season which is twice a year, they need to be brushed daily for about 1-2 weeks.
Bathing: Corgi needs to be bathed every week in Singapore's humid climate. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: The hair length remain constant so hair cut is not necessary. Good to trim around hygiene area for cleanliness and around paw pads to prevent slipping while walking.
Nail Clipping: The toe nails need to be clipped once every few months. Best to ask a professional groomer to do this to prevent bleeding when the nails are cut too close to the quick (blood vessel).
Teeth Cleaning: Brushing teeth daily is preferred, if not possible, weekly brushing is sufficient. Give raw bones regularly as enrichment which double as natural teeth cleaner.
Ear Cleaning: Their ears may be prone to infection as it is dropping down which can trap heat and moisture especially in Singapore's humid climate. Clean the ears with appropriate solution once a week
