Dachshunds, also known as hot dog, Doxie, Dashie or Teckels is a short-legged, long-bodied, hound-type dog breed originally bred in Germany to hunt down badgers and burrow-dwelling animals such as rabbits. They are available in 3 types, i.e. haired, wire-haired, or long-haired and come in a variation of colors. Moreover, they also come in three sizes: standard, miniature and rabbit. The most commonly preferred size in Singapore is the miniature Dachshund. This kennel breed is built for swimming and distance running, making it an energetic and playful breed of dog. They are also highly ranked as one of the most popular dogs in the world since 1950s.
A Dachshund has a friendly and lively personality, making it suitable for families and friends. They can sometime have loud, deep barks for a dog their size and they bark a lot but they can be trained not to do it frequently. Dachshunds are energetic and active breed of dog. They require a moderate level of exercise daily, preferably between 45-60 minutes purposeful exercise and mental stimulation a day. A Dachshund enjoys a variety of activities, such as walking, fetching, digging, agility training and swimming. However, it's important to adjust the exercise level based on your dog's interest and age. For instance, a standard-size dog requires 20%-30% of more exercise intensity compared to a miniature size. If your Dachshund is a puppy, a 5-10 minutes of walk could be enough to keep it happy and cheerful. It's important to note that Dachshunds are prone to joint and back problems due to their long body and short legs which can be exacerbated by too much jumping or high-impact exercise. It's important to avoid activities that put too much strain on their joints, such as running on hard surfaces or jumping from high places. Speaking of the back problems, They are more prone to back injuries such as Intervertebral Disc Disease (IDD) and Hip dysplasia than other breed of dogs. This is developed mainly from obesity which puts pressure on the dog's back and hips. In summary, a Dachshund needs daily exercise to maintain their health and wellbeing. They enjoy a variety of activities and benefit from a mix of physical and mental stimulation. However, it's important to be mindful of their back health and avoid high-impact activities that could cause injury.
A smooth-haired Dachshund requires the least amount of grooming because its fur is very short. Just a gentle brush to remove loose hairs every few days is enough to keep your kennel clean. For the long-haired and wire-haired Dachshunds, you would need to regularly brush and groom their hairs to detangle and keep them clean.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for long-haired and wire-haired Dachshunds:
Brushing: Regular brushing can help remove loose hair, prevent mats and tangles, and distribute natural oils throughout the coat, which helps keep the skin health. Use the deshedding brush to remove undercoat weekly.
Bathing: Generally speaking, a Dachshund can be bathed at least once a month but due to the hot and humid climate in Singapore, we recommend bathing your dog at least once in every 2-3 weeks. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your Dachshund to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: Their nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent them from getting too long and causing discomfort or injury. Be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: They have soft, long floppy ears which make them prone to ear infections and other ear-related problems because of their size and shape. So it's important to clean their ears regularly with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria.
Overall, a long-haired and wire-haired Dachshund require regular grooming to keep them looking and feeling their best. With proper grooming and maintenance, you can help ensure your dog stays healthy, comfortable, and happy.
