The Jack Russell Terrier originated in England in the early 19th century where they were derived from fox-hunting dogs by the county's parson named Jack Russell. Though closely similar, they are a different breed from the Parson Russell Terrier. Because of its origin as a hunting and sport dog, this breed of dog is well-known for its highly energetic and alert personality. They are highly spirited and have a strong-willed of their own. Don't get fooled by their small size because Jack Russell Terrier is notorious for their high exercise requirements and mental stimulation. If you're not an active person, we highly don't recommend you buy this dog. They require high level of exercise to stay healthy and stress-free. We recommend at least 60-80 minutes of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep your kennel happy and cheerful. It's also important to adjust the exercise duration to suit your dog. For instance, a puppy requires significantly lesser amount of exercise compared to an adult dog. A jack Russell Terrier enjoys a variety of activities, such as walking, fetching, agility training, and others, especially digging. Because of its hunting origin, Jack Russell likes to dig and hunt smaller animals. So if you have a garden at the back of your house, your dog will definitely enjoy it! In summary, a Jack Russell Terrier needs daily exercise to maintain their health, wellbeing and to keep them stress-free. They are very energetic and enjoy a variety of activities and benefit from a mix of physical and mental stimulation. Without enough exercise, they can really stress out and destroy things in your house.
Jack Russell Terrier shed quite a lot and they come in 3 types of coat - smooth, broken, and rough. The smooth-coat breed is a bit easier than the rough-coat because the hair is shorter. They can sometime shed more than usual because of irritated skins caused by spending more time outdoor exercising. Therefore you might want to pay extra attention to your dog's skin.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Jack Russell:
Brushing: We recommend grooming your dog at least 1-2 times a week to maintain the coat health and keep them moist.
Bathing: Because of its short hair which makes Jack Russell prone to germs and bacteria, we commend bathing your dog at least once a wekk. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your kennel to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: The frequency of nail clipping depends on the surface where your dog mostly walk on. Otherwise clip your dog's nails once every 6-8 weeks are enough. But whenever you do, be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: Jack Russell ears don't require a lot of cleaning as they are not flops. Over-cleaning can lead to ear infections. For cleaning, we recommend you clean them with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria in the long run.
Overall, a Jack Russell Terrier is quite a high maintenance breed of dog that does require some grooming and bathing or cleaning because of their short skin. The rough coat breed does require a bit of extra attention as well.
