The Poochon, also known as a Bichonpoo or Bichoodle, is a designer dog breed that gained popularity in the late 20th century. This delightful hybrid combines the Bichon Frise, a beloved European companion breed with roots dating back to the 13th century, and the Poodle, known for its intelligence and versatility. The goal was to create a small, hypoallergenic dog with a friendly disposition and low-shedding coat, making it an ideal choice for families and individuals with allergies. The Poochon's history is relatively recent, primarily focusing on enhancing the desirable traits of its parent breeds.
Poochons are known for their charming appearance and endearing personality. They typically have a small, compact stature with a curly or wavy coat that can sport various colors, inheriting the Poodle's hypoallergenic qualities. These dogs are characterized by their intelligence, often displaying the smarts of the Poodle side of the family. This intelligence makes them quick learners and eager participants in training sessions. Despite their small size, Poochons have big hearts, boasting a friendly and affectionate nature. They thrive on human companionship and adapt well to family life, getting along with children and other pets. Poochons strike a balance between playfulness and calmness, making them adaptable to different living situations. They require daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy but are not overly hyperactive. Their watchful yet not overly aggressive disposition also makes them alert watchdogs. Grooming is a necessity to maintain their hypoallergenic coats, but their delightful personalities and loyalty make it all worthwhile. In summary, the Poochon is a relatively new breed that combines the best attributes of its parent breeds, resulting in an affectionate, intelligent, and hypoallergenic companion that enriches the lives of those fortunate enough to have them as part of their families.

Poochons, like most small to medium-sized breeds, have moderate exercise requirements. While they aren't hyperactive dogs, they still need daily physical activity and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Here are some guidelines for meeting their exercise needs:
Daily Walks: Taking your Poochon for a daily walk is an excellent way to provide exercise and mental stimulation. Aim for a 20-30 minute walk each day to keep them active.
Playtime: Poochons love to play, so engage them in interactive games like fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek. These activities not only provide exercise but also strengthen your bond.
Indoor Play: On days when outdoor exercise isn't possible due to weather or other constraints, engage your Poochon in indoor play with toys and puzzle feeders to keep them mentally stimulated.
Socialization: Socializing your Poochon with other dogs at a dog park or through playdates can provide both physical and mental exercise. Ensure that the play environment is safe and supervised.
Training: Mental exercise is as important as physical activity for Poochons. Obedience training, teaching new tricks, and using puzzle toys can challenge their intelligence and keep them engaged.
Routine: Establish a daily exercise routine so your Poochon knows what to expect. Consistency is key to maintaining their health and well-being.
Swimming: Some Poochons enjoy swimming, which can be a great low-impact exercise. If you have access to a pool or a safe swimming area, introduce them to water gradually and ensure their safety.
Remember that individual Poochons may have varying exercise preferences and energy levels. It's essential to pay attention to your dog's cues and adjust their exercise routine accordingly. Additionally, while Poochons require daily activity, be cautious not to over-exercise them, as their small size and delicate joints can make them prone to injury. Always consult with a veterinarian or a professional dog trainer for personalized exercise recommendations based on your specific Poochon's needs and health.
The Poochon/Bichoodle don't shed a lot and their coat is single coated, just like the Maltese dog. Although they don't shed a lot, Poochon's single-layered coat means that they will grow very long and will require haircut every few months.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Poochon:
Brushing: We recommend grooming your dog at least 1-2 times a week to maintain the coat health and keep them moist.
Bathing: Due to Singapore's humid weather, shower every week is recommended to prevent smell and skin infection. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your dog to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: The frequency of nail clipping depends on the surface where your dog mostly walk on. Otherwise clip your dog's nails once every 6-8 weeks are enough. But whenever you do, be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: We recommend you clean them with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria in the long run.
Overall, a Poochon requires haircut every 3 months and brushing weekly to prevent tangle.
