Despite their small size, the Yorkshire Terrier is very active and enjoy regular low-moderate level exercise to stay healthy and stress-free. We recommend at least 30-45 minutes of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep your kennel happy and cheerful. It's also important to adjust the exercise duration to suit your dog. For instance, a puppy requires significantly lesser amount of exercise compared to an adult. A Yorkie enjoys a variety of activities, such as walking, fetching, digging, agility training, and others. However, keep in mind of their agile bodies, which are prone to injuries. In summary, yorkies daily exercise to maintain their health, wellbeing and to keep them stress-free. They are very energetic and enjoy a variety of activities and benefit from a mix of physical and mental stimulation. But make sure not to over-exercise your dog as this breed can easily get injured and be sure to adjust the intensity based on its age.
The Yorkshire Terrier don't shed a lot and their coat is actually more like a human hair than the typical dog's coat, just like the Maltese dog. Although they don't shed a lot, Yorkie's single-layered coat means that they are more exposed to the environment, making them more prone to dust, debris and skin diseases, which require special attention.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Yorkies:
Brushing: We recommend grooming your dog at least 1-2 times a week to maintain the coat health and keep them moist.
Bathing: Because of the lack of double coat, Yorkie doesn't require a lot bathing as this remove their natural skin oil. Generally speaking, once in every week is recommended keep your kennel clean. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your kennel to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: The frequency of nail clipping depends on the surface where your dog mostly walk on. Otherwise clip your dog's nails once every 6-8 weeks are enough. But whenever you do, be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: Yorkies ears don't require a lot of cleaning as they are not flops. Over-cleaning can lead to ear infections. For cleaning, we recommend you clean them with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria in the long run.
Overall, a Yorkshire Terrier is quite a low maintenance breed that doesn't require a lot of grooming, bathing or cleaning because of over-grooming or over-cleaning can lead to removal of the natural skin oil. However, it requires an extra attention to its skin as it's prone to diseases.
