Labradors are a playful, active, highly-energetic breed of dog that require moderate to high level of exercise. We recommend at least 45-60 minutes of regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep your kennel happy and cheerful. It's also important to adjust the exercise duration to suit your dog. For instance, a puppy requires significantly lesser amount of exercise compared to an adult dog. A Labrador enjoys a variety of activities, such as walking, fetching, digging, agility training, and others, especially swimming. They love swimming and if you do too, then this breed of dog is a perfect companion for you! In summary, a Labrador needs daily exercise to maintain their health, wellbeing and to keep them stress-free. They are very energetic and enjoy a variety of activities and benefit from a mix of physical and mental stimulation.
Despite their soft, thick double-coat, Labrador Retrievers are generally low-maintenance when it comes to grooming and brushing compared to other dogs.
Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Labrador:
Brushing: We recommend grooming your dog at least once a week to maintain the coat health and once a day during the times of the year when it sheds the most.
Bathing: Because of the thick, double-layered fur and hot weather in Singapore, Labradors require a regular bathing to keep them cool and stress-free. Generally speaking, once in every week is recommended keep your kennel clean. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
Trimming: They also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the pads and between the toes to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your kennel to a professional dog groomer every 3 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
Nail Clipping: The frequency of nail clipping depends on the surface where your dog mostly walk on. Otherwise clip your dog's nails once every 6-8 weeks are enough. But whenever you do, be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for your dog to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
Ear Cleaning: Labrador's flop ears can quickly accumulate dust, ear wax and debris, making them easy to get dirty and lead to ear infection. So it's important to clean their ears regularly with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria in the long run.
Overall, a Labrador is a low maintenance dog that that doesn't require regular grooming or brushing except during the time of the year when it sheds more frequently. However due to the hot weather in Singapore, you might need to keep your dog cool by bathing it a bit more regular.
