Breed Characteristics

Apricot Toy Poodle Puppy
The Poodle is a breed of dog that is believed to have originated in Germany, where it was known as the Pudelhund, which translates to "puddle dog" in German. The breed was developed to serve as a water retriever for hunters, and its curly, water-resistant coat and excellent swimming abilities made it well-suited for this task.

The Poodle's exact origins are unclear, but it is believed to be descended from various types of water dogs that were common in Europe during the Middle Ages. These dogs were used for hunting waterfowl and retrieving game from water, and they were also used in circus performances due to their intelligence and trainability.

Over time, breeders began to selectively breed these water dogs for specific traits, such as their curly coats and their ability to perform tricks. This led to the development of the modern-day Poodle, which comes in three different sizes (standard, miniature, and toy) and is known for its intelligence, trainability, and elegant appearance.

Poodles are a versatile breed of dog that come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. Toy poodles are the smallest, weighing between 3 and 5 kg and standing at 10 inches or less. Miniature poodles are slightly larger, weighing between 5 and 10 pounds and standing between 10 and 15 inches tall. Standard poodles are the largest, weighing between 15 and 25 pounds and standing at 15 inches or taller. In recent years, teacup poodles are gaining popularity. However these teacup poodles generally have poor health.

Despite their size differences, all poodles share similar characteristics.
They are highly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dogs that make excellent family pets. They are friendly to human, children and other pets alike. A poodle is a terrific pup for first-time dog owners, families in search of an adorable playmate for children, or seniors who want an endearing companion. The most popular size in SIngapore is the toy poodle.

Toy Poodles are known for their hypoallergenic coats which is non shedding, which make them a popular choice for people with allergies. While the Mayo Clinic stresses that no dog is allergen-free, most people have less reaction to the proteins found in a poodle's dander, saliva, and urine.  They are also highly trainable and excel in obedience and agility competitions.

Toy Poodles have a distinctive coat that requires regular grooming to keep it in good condition. They have a single layer of curly or corded fur that does not shed, making them a good choice for people with allergies. Poodle owners should brush their dog's coat regularly to prevent matting and tangles. Professional grooming is also recommended every six to eight weeks to keep their coat looking its best. Additionally, poodles require regular nail trimming and ear cleaning to maintain their overall health.

Toy Poodles are also known for their relatively long lifespan of around 12-15 years. Overall, Poodles are a popular breed for their friendly personality, hypoallergenic coat, and adaptability to different living arrangements.

Poodles and their crosses like Maltipoos, Shihpoos, Cavapoos, Cockapoos, Goldendoodles are very popular in Singapore due to their trainability and non shedding coat. The poodle crosses have differences in temperament and looks e.g. energy level. Maltipoos and shihpoos tend to be calmer, Cavapoos are moderate in energy, Cockapoos and Goldendoodles are higher energy. However these characteristics can vary depending on the individual dog and their upbringing, even within the same breed.  These breeds are popular with first time dog owners too!

Exercise Requirements

Poodles have moderate exercise requirements and generally need a daily walk or playtime to stay healthy and happy. Toy and mini poodles are small dogs and can get enough exercise in a small space, making them a good choice for apartment living.

For those living in a house, they enjoy daily walks and playtime in a fenced yard. Miniature and standard poodles have more energy than toy poodles and require more exercise to stay fit. Poodles also enjoy swimming and other water activities, making them great companions for trips to the beach or lake.

A walk around the block or playing fetch in the backyard can provide enough physical stimulation for a toy Poodle. Additionally, they enjoy mental stimulation, so playing games or practicing obedience training can also be a good way to keep them engaged and active.

Poodles are also social dogs and enjoy spending time with their owners, so incorporating playtime into daily routines can help to strengthen the bond between dog and owner. Regular exercise and mental stimulation can also help prevent unwanted behaviors such as chewing or excessive barking.

It's important to note that toy Poodles can become overweight if they don't get enough exercise or if they overeat, which can lead to health problems such as joint issues and diabetes. Therefore, it's crucial to provide your Poodles with a balanced diet, appropriate portion sizes, and regular exercise to keep them at a healthy weight. We will guide you on the best food and nutrition available in Singapore.

Grooming Requirements

Poodles have a curly coat that requires regular grooming to keep it clean, tangle-free, and healthy. The grooming requirements for a Poodle may vary depending on the length of their coat, but in general, they need to be brushed and groomed at least once a week.

Here are some grooming requirements and recommendations for Poodles:
  1. Brushing: Regular brushing can help remove loose hair, prevent mats and tangles, and distribute natural oils throughout the coat, which helps keep the skin health.
  2. Bathing: Poodles needs to be bathed every week in Singapore's humid climate. Use a mild dog shampoo (we recommend Silky shampoo) and be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any skin irritation. Lastly, remember to blow dry to make sure the skin is completely dry to prevent skin issues.
  3. Trimming: Poodles  also require occasional trimming or clipping, particularly around the ears, paws, and face, to prevent overgrowth and tangles and maintain a tidy appearance. Bring your poodle to a professional dog groomer every 2 months for a full grooming service to get the best result.
  4. Nail Clipping: Poodles' nails should be trimmed regularly to prevent them from getting too long and causing discomfort or injury. Be sure to use a sharp, proper nail clipper and avoid cutting too close to the quick. Leave the cutting to the Professional dog groomer to avoid traumatizing the puppy if nails bleed during cutting (which is very common).
  5. Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning is important for Poodles to prevent dental problems. Brush their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a dog-specific toothpaste.
  6. Ear Cleaning: Poodles can have ear infections, so it's important to clean their ears regularly with a gentle, dog-specific ear cleaner to prevent buildup of dirt and bacteria.
Overall, Poodles require regular grooming to keep them looking and feeling their best. With proper grooming and maintenance, you can help ensure your Poodle stays healthy, comfortable, and happy.
